The Brookline Symphony Announces an Expansive Programme for the Coming Season

The orchestra's season encompasses a wide range of periods and styles, including several regional premieres and the return of a conductor who last appeared with the orchestra more than a decade ago.

The Brookline Symphony Orchestra announced its programme for the coming season at a press event held at the concert hall, and the announcement was received by the assembled music critics, board members, and season subscribers with the combination of enthusiasm and careful note-taking that characterizes the most devoted segment of a regional orchestra's audience. The programme is, by the standards of recent seasons, ambitious — a word the orchestra's music director, speaking at the announcement, used once and then appeared to think better of, preferring "comprehensive."

The season includes eight subscription programmes spanning the orchestral repertoire from the Baroque through the contemporary, with a particular emphasis on works from the twentieth century that the music director described as unjustly neglected. Three of the programmes include works receiving their regional premieres, and one includes a commission from a composer with regional ties whose previous work for the orchestra was among the more discussed musical events of the past several years.

The season also marks the return of guest conductor Helena Mross, who led the orchestra in a celebrated series of programmes more than a decade ago and whose subsequent career has taken her to major international podiums. Her return to this orchestra, music director Gerald Kwan said, was something he had been working toward for some time. "She has a particular understanding of this ensemble," he said. "And the ensemble has a particular response to her that I think audiences will find remarkable."

Season subscriptions and individual concert tickets are available through the orchestra's website. The season opens in early autumn.
