About The Standard

A Publication Rooted in the Region's Public Life

Independent. Accountable. Committed to the conversation that holds communities together.

Who We Are

The Brookline Standard is an independent regional news organization committed to the principle that communities are better served when they are well informed. We cover the public affairs, civic institutions, community life, and cultural landscape of our region with the seriousness and care that those subjects deserve.

We have been part of the civic fabric of the communities we cover for a considerable time, and we regard that continuity as a responsibility rather than a credential. The trust of our readers is not inherited — it is earned, story by story, through reporting that is accurate, fair, and attentive to the complexity of the matters we address.

“The Standard's purpose has always been the same: to give this region's residents an honest accounting of the world they share and the decisions being made in their name.”

Margaret Hale, Editor-in-Chief

Our Tradition of Reporting

The Standard's coverage has long been characterized by a preference for depth over velocity, for context over sensation, and for the kind of sustained attention to a community that produces genuine understanding rather than merely adequate information. We are not the first to report every development, but we aim to be among those who report it most accurately and most fully.

Our Values

Responsible Reporting

We hold ourselves to standards of accuracy, fairness, and proportionality owed to our subjects and readers alike. Corrections are made promptly and without equivocation.

Editorial Independence

The Standard's editorial decisions are made by its journalists, free from interference by commercial interests or political pressures.

Public Interest

We measure the value of our journalism by its service to the public interest broadly construed, not to any single constituency or political tendency.

Civic Dialogue

A well-informed citizenry is the precondition for functioning democratic life. We regard the cultivation of informed civic dialogue as among our most important contributions.

Letters, Corrections & Contact

The Standard welcomes correspondence from readers. We read all correspondence and publish a selection, edited for length and clarity. We are committed to correcting errors of fact promptly and transparently.

The Brookline Standard. Part of the civic fabric of the communities it covers.
